The NCS consists of its chairperson, its secretary and the chairpersons and secretaries of the National Subcommissions on Stratigraphy.

Objectives of the NCS are:

• to establish, publish and update a stratigraphic nomenclature for the Belgian units;
• to coordinate the works of the subcommissions, and to validate the modifications in the previous stratigraphic patterns;
• to examine eventual controversy decisions of the subcommissions;
• to promote new stratigraphic methods and multidisciplinary stratigraphy;
• to be the interface with the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and its subcommissions.

Procedure for approval of new lithostratigraphic units or amendments

• The author submits its proposal in electronic format to the secretary of the subcommissions (text .doc and figures .jpg 96 dpi). The proposal will follow the structure adopted in the 2001 volume.
• The subcommissions discuss the new proposal and in case an agreement is reached, its secretary submits this proposal to the NCS secretary for review and insertion in the webpage as "proposals and discussions". Decisions in the subcommissions are taken preferably by consensus within 3 months after the submission.
• During a period of 3 months after insertion in the webpage, comments, disagreements or amendments regarding new units have to be addressed to the secretary of the corresponding subcommission.
• After that period, the subcommission re-examines the proposal and requests eventual modifications. Delay should not exceed 3 months.
• When a final agreement is reached in the subcommission, the new or modified unit is submitted to the NCS secretary who inserts it on the webpage as "accepted by the subcommission and submitted to NCS".
• NCS will then accept or reject the proposition at its next annual meeting, if the proposition can be placed at the website at least two months before the meeting. If accepted the unit receives an official statute.
