Mission
The mission of the various national scientific committees of Belgium is to promote and coordonnate both at national and international levels the activities of their relevant disciplines. They have been created by the "Classe des Sciences de l'Académie Royale de Belgique" and the "Klasse der Wtenschappen van de Koninklijke Academie van België". There are members for Belgium of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
The National Committee of Geological Sciences of Belgium has close relationships with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) which is also a member of ICSU. IUGS is a non-governmental organization that promotes and encourages the study of Geological problems, especially those of world-wide significance, and supports and facilities international and interdisciplinary cooperation in earth sciences. A major part of IUGS effort goes into mutidisciplinary international Joint Programs, e.g. : International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP), Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere (ICL), Geological Applications of Remote Sensing (GARS), Mineral Deposit Modelling, Earth Processes and Golbal Change, Circum-Atlantic Project, etc.

National Commission of Stratigraphy
The national commission of stratigraphy of Belgium refers to the National Committee of Geological Sciences for matters dealing with the stratigraphy of Belgium. The commission is subdivided in sub-commissions corresponding to the main systems of the geological time table.
