The International Bibliography of Historical Demography (IBHD) was founded
in 1977 by Professor Etienne Hélin. From the outset, the project
has been funded by the French Société de Démographie
Historique (S.D.H.), the International Union
for the Scientific Study of Population (I.U.S.S.P.),
and the International Committee of Historical Sciences (I.C.H.S.).
|
At that time, significant developments were occurring outside the
pioneer countries, which resulted in an important increase in annual
publications. For this reason, one of the primary objectives of
the IBDH was to offer researchers a tool that would remain up to
date. The natural choice was to follow the model of a current
bibliography.
An international approach has
been used to promote the enrichment derived from different focuses,
methods, and points of view, and to avoid the compartmentalization
of any discipline. A team of correspondents,
who are mostly historical demographers, is spread across the four
corners of the planet, and each one is charged with "covering"
a geographic region. Their task consists of selecting and describing
the publications (books, book chapters,
articles) that will appear in the IBDH.
|
 |
The IBDH is not a comprehensive resource for at least two reasons. Attaining
completeness is practically impossible. Furthermore, comprehensiveness
supposes the inclusion of numerous notices concerning publications which,
without wishing to diminish their value, have a strictly local character.
Until 1996, the IBDH was distributed exclusively in the form of an annual
review. The four indexes planned from its inception (authors,
subjects, geography, chronology) were effective and convenient for users.
The progress of information technology, specifically computerized documentation,
offered new possibilities for the IBDH. In 1989 a data
base to receive all of the published notices was created using
CDS-ISIS bibliography software.
By 1991 the data base contained all of the notices published between 1978
and 1990. Since then, the data base has been expanding regularly. More
than 13,000 notices are currently
included.
The digital version of the database has only been disseminated in a modest
way. A CD_ROM issued in 1996 was not
widely distributed. Access to the database via the Internet should radically
change this situation.
