Seagrass ecology

 

The phanerogam Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile is a large component of sea grass along the Mediterranean coast. This ecosystem, generally unknown to the general public, is a prime breeding site for many species of fish and marine invertebrates, protects the beaches from erosion, and participates in the oxygenation of coastal areas. Dozens of animal and plant species are closely related.

For over 25 years, the Section of Oceanography studying different aspects of the ecology and dynamics of Posidonia meadows: spatial and temporal variation of phenological parameters, cycles of carbon and nitrogen dynamics and animal communities plant & associated food chains, transplantation techniques and restoration.

Since the early 1970s, the Oceanographic Station STARESO (Calvi, Corsica) is used as the basis of field research. The Section favors in situ experimentation and has extensive experience of working in underwater diving.
